After Gagan Thapa brought Sushmita Regmi case in parliament: Miss Global organizer Manoj Pandey held

Following significant demonstrations and a House instruction to act quickly, police arrested Manoj Pandey on Saturday. Pandey is accused of rape by a former beauty pageant contestant who hoped to be a model.

Pandey was detained in the Swayambhu region of Kathmandu on Saturday afternoon, according to the Nepal Police Crime Division.

On the condition of anonymity, a senior official from the crime branch said, “We have taken Manoj Pandey into custody for an inquiry.” “It’s part of our inquiry into the allegations against him.”

Pandey, the proprietor of Model Global Visas Consultancy, was detained only days after a lady recorded a series of videos on TikTok detailing instances in which she was sexually harassed by various males, including Pandey.

In the recordings, she describes how Pandey, the pageant’s organizer, drugged and raped her in a hotel room after inviting her to a “victory celebration” for the beauty contest she had entered.

The sexual assault lasted six months, according to the victim.

When she was first raped and sexually abused, the survivor, now 24, was 16 years old.

The recordings of the young child sparked an outpouring of solidarity and indignation throughout social media.

Protests were held in support of the victim on Saturday in towns around the nation, including Kathmandu, Pokhara, Itahari, and Birtamode, and called for the repeal of the statute of limitations, which has become a major impediment to justice for survivors of rape and sexual harassment.

A statute of limitations is a legislation that specifies the maximum length of time that parties to a dispute have from the date of an alleged civil or criminal offense to file a lawsuit. However, the amount of time a victim has to commence legal action against the alleged wrongdoer varies depending on the jurisdiction and the nature of the offense. In rape cases in Nepal, a plaintiff can only submit a complaint within one year after the event, according to section 229(2) of the National Penal (Code) Act.

People have rushed to the streets yelling “We Want Justice” and “Hang the Rapist” since the survivor told about how she was assaulted. “Hold Perpetrators Accountable,” “Remove the Statute of Limitations for Rape and Sexual Violence,” “Take Action Against the Guilty,” “Provide Support to Survivors,” and “Enable Fast Track Court for Rape and Sexual Violence,” among the signs displayed by the demonstrators.

Initially, the Nepal Police were hesitant to arrest Pandey, citing the statute of limitations for filing a court case.
