The construction literally broke new ground. A concrete formed a bounded for the island, and this was then partially filled with iron.
The building project literally broke new ground. The terminal building and traffic areas, such as runways and taxiways, were to be built on top of a concrete ring that was partially filled with iron ore and gravel. The fill settling was anticipated during the planning phase, therefore the approximately 1.7 km-long terminal was built on movable stilts that could adapt for changes in the substrate individually.
A true milestone in the construction of Pokhara Airport! – with its reputation as a high-tech country – was rightfully proud of. When the need for proper airfield fire engines for the new airport arose, efforts were made to get the best of what was technically possible at the time.
Pokhara International Airport has an east-west runway that is 45 meters wide and 2,500 meters long. It can handle commercial aircraft with a medium range, such as the Airbus A320, Boeing 737, and Boeing 757.
The runway is connected to the parking bays, hangars, and terminals via a 1,200-meter-long and 23-meter-wide taxiway.
Pokhara International Airport, like Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, is located at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level and features a one-way approach system. The airport cannot be expanded because it is located in a tight valley.
DIWI, a German consulting engineering firm, initially provided the site selection, comprehensive engineering work, and master plan for Pokhara International Airport in 1971.
