If homeownership is the American dream, what exactly does that dream home look like? Clothing and furnishing styles change regularly, and believe it or not, so do house styles. The modern American home has gone through many changes throughout the decades, from the postwar ranch homes of the 1950s to the suburban McMansions of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Houses are not as unique or beautiful as the mansions of the late 1800s. Many of them look similar to each other. They are known in a negative way as McMansions – mansions that are as common and quickly made as the food at a McDonalds fast food restaurant.

The number of styles of houses found across the US is a large topic that even a book long survey would at best summarize but here is a quick list of the basic types of houses you might find in the US. But keep in mind many Americans do not live in houses at all–and some live on estates and on boats.

I’m intentionally excluding luxury condos in Manhattan overlooking Central Park, houseboats in marinas, derelict buses in communes, extravagant mansions that are compounds of several buildings, and cardboard box shelters under highway ramps.
